My Last Blog post Of 2015

Reflecting back on 2015 I could never have imagined I’d be given  the title Ms Wheelchair California 2015. When the Ms Wheelchair California 2015 Pageant ended on February 27 . My friend Dr Alette  Coble Temple was crowned Ms Wheelchair California 2015 and was given a first runner up sash for the second year in row as well as a community award by the judges. I thought entering the pageant twice was enough. I’m never going to be Ms Wheelchair California. My best friend Jackie whispered ” Just wait I don’t know what, but I have a feeling something is going to happen.”

On August 1 Dr. Alette Coble Temple was crowned Ms Wheelchair America 2016! On August 20 I was crown Ms Wheelchair California 2015! Whether I was First Runner up 2014, 2015 or Ms Wheelchair California 2015, It has been a great 2 years advocating for health care for those affected by disabilities and working with and learning from other disabilities advocates.  When a new Ms Wheelchair California is crowned January 16, 2016, my reign will end, but  my disability advocacy won’t stop. Advocacy isn’t about me it’s about helping others.

Equal Access to Health Care Starts with Equal access to Exam Tables

I had many doctors appointments scheduled in the month of November. Like my mother before me . My birthday present to myself is check to make sure I’m healthy. so I got a mammogram, went to the gynecologist  and got a test. As of today I’m happy to say all my test came back normal.

What was not normal was the doctor’s exam table was so high my PCA’s back got thrown out getting me up on the exam table! This is one of the reasons my friends who use wheelchairs have a hard time getting examined properly: They cannot even get on the exam table. What caregiver is going to take her for a follow up visit if he/she hurt her back during the first visit?

Equal access to health care means equal access to exam tables and wheelchair scales rather than regular scales  in doctor’s  offices and hospitals.

Health Care Rationing Causes Death

Last week a good friend of mine died of cancer I won’t mention her name to protect her privacy .Six months ago she was diagnosed with cancer Thanks to health care rationing known as “Obama Care” A late diagnosis meant nothing could be done in terms of treating her cancer. She was a women in her sixties who had Cerebral Palsy.

As a fifty year old woman with Cerebral Palsy whose relationship with her gynocologist was ended fourteen months ago due to healthcare rationing I wonder if I and other Californians affected by disabilities whose healthcare is rationed will suffer the same fate my friend did this week.

That’s why I’m fighting so hard as Ms Wheelchair California 2015 For  health care not health care rationing!11873389_10153216015198167_3087934185243892029_n

Three Major Struggles Of The Disability Community And Why They Need To Be Brought To Attention

Three major struggles of the disability community are  1) the able bodied community’s misconceptions regarding the abilities of people affected by disabilities. I recently applied for a counseling job and was asked by the interviewer,” Do you think you are healthy enough to do this job?” I thought: what does the fact that I use a wheelchair have to do with my ability to counsel people? My answer was nothing, To be a counselor I have to listen to my clients and when necessary open my month and talk to them. A counselor must have education degrees credentials and experience. I have those, but all my interviewer could see was my wheelchair. After the interview ended I thought how many other interviews have  I had where other employers thought the same thing this person did but knew that to ask me whether I was healthy enough to perform the essential duties of a counseling job was an illegal question under the Americans with Disabilities Act? We can pass the ADA to make discrimination against people affected by disabilities illegal but we need to change people’s attitudes about us so the able bodied community can see we may use wheelchairs to move around but we are as capable as they are of getting a job  done. We are not disabled we are differently enabled. Why does this first struggle need to be brought to attention? If it’s not qualified workers affected by disabilities will be forced to live on SSI/SSDI for the rest their lives instead of working just because prejudice in the able bodied community against us!

2) The second major struggle of the disability community is health care. The able bodied community may argue : Thanks to Obama care we all able bodied and disabled now have health care. I would argue what we got was not health care but health care rationing! When everyone gets limited to one plan, one doctor one hospital instead of being able to go to any medi cal provider like I could before Obama care, I am now limited to one doctor one hospital I as a 50 year old woman with Cerebral Palsy, have less health care than I did a year ago! If people affected by disabilities don’t have adequate health care they will lose the mobility they have and die sooner than they otherwise would have.

3) The third major struggle is of the disability community is related to the second the cuts in In Home Supportive Services hours by medi cal. Due to those cuts it makes it nearly impossible to train new personal care attendants, because no one wants the job! PCAs must work additional jobs just to pay their rent! If people affected by disabilities don’t have PCA to get them up in the morning and put them to bed at night, they cannot live in their own home!

I want to be chosen Ms Wheelchair California 2015 because, I want to lobby for these struggles and  I hope to change people’s attitudes so that when little miss wheelchair California 20ll, 2012, 2013 and 2014 are adults living with a disability will be easier for them than it has been for me.

The Newly Crowned Ms Wheelchair California 2015 Hillary Marides

Thursday night August 20, 2015 I was crowned Ms Wheelchair California 2015 to succeed Dr Alette Coble Temple Ms Wheelchair America  2016. As Ms Wheelchair California 2015 my platform is less out of pocket medical costs for those affected by disabilities. Why is this important? When Obama Care was passed. People affected by disabilities didn’t get better health care.We got health care rationing! As a 50 year old disabled woman born with Cerebral Palsy. I have less access to health care than I did one year ago! When I was on fee for service Medi Cal and Medicare I could go to any doctor and any hospital that accepted medical/medicare. As a result I was forced to terminated my relationship with my gynecologist  of ten years because he doesn’t work out of the hospital on my health plan nor with my primary care doctor.  I can no longer see the orthopedist who did my hip surgery either because he works at yet another hospital not on my health plan. Many adults affected by disabilities in California find themselves in similar  situations. That’s  why this is important!
